empowering women through goat farming in bangladesh
VSF-Sweden and the Model Livestock Advancement Foundation (MLAF) launched a visionary initiative in June 2017 to empower women through comprehensive capacity building in backyard goat farming. This year, we are delighted to support this initiative as a further 20 women are currently participating in training delivered by MLAF. Through the programme, each woman is not only gaining valuable skills in goat health and husbandry, but has also become the owner of her own goat.
This latest course focuses on practical and theoretical training in key areas of goat health and management, including handling, feeding, deworming, and vaccinations. Over the two-week programme, the women — many of whom come from challenging backgrounds — are learning how to care for their animals and develop sustainable livelihoods.
The goal is to strengthen the role of women as income earners while improving animal welfare. Upon completion of the course and passing the examination, each participant will keep her goat, which will help sustain the household.
Check out the video below of Assalamu Alaikum sharing her experience. She completed the course in 2023 and is now sustaining herself and her family. Since graduating, she has grown her livestock from just one goat to six healthy, thriving animals.
