Livestock Innovations for Thriving Communities in malawi
In collaboration with partner NGOs VSF Netherlands and the Centre for Community Empowerment Initiatives (CCEI), we are supporting the Livestock Innovations for Thriving Communities (LIFT) project in Mzimba North and Rumphi Districts. This is an important research project in Malawi to assess the impact of Community Animal Healthcare Workers (CAHWs). The project seeks to improve livestock productivity and strengthen the local veterinary service system by, among other things, training 30 Community Animal Health Workers (CAHWs). Why are we doing this? Community Animal Healthcare Workers play a vital role in supporting livestock health in rural communities. To safeguard their future—and the livelihoods of the communities they serve—we aim to ensure that their work is formally recognized by Malawi’s Department of Agriculture. Strengthening recognition of CAHWs will help build healthier, more resilient livestock systems that are essential for food security, income generation, and thriving rural communities. What are we doing? This project is reviewing the current CAHW training curriculum and materials, while also strengthening collaboration between CAHWs and formal veterinary services in rural areas. We will work to foster stronger partnerships with government and private veterinarians, helping ensure CAHWs are properly supported and integrated into the animal health system, and able to provide essential healthcare.
