Volunteers in Irish Veterinary Assistance (VIVA) has officially rebranded as Vets Without Borders Ireland, aligning its name and mission with the global network Vétérinaires Sans Frontières International (VSF International).

This strategic change reinforces the organisation’s identity as part of a global movement committed to advancing the interconnected health of humans, animals, and the environment.

With an estimated 75% of emerging human diseases originating from animals, the importance of addressing health from a One Health perspective—recognising the link between people, animals, and their shared environment—has never been clearer.

This holistic approach is particularly critical in the Global South, where livestock play a vital role in rural livelihoods, nutrition, and economic resilience.

“Healthy animals lead to healthier families and communities,” said Mike Burke, CEO of Vets Without Borders Ireland. “Our new identity better reflects the breadth of our work and strengthens our connection with the global Vets Without Borders community.”

As part of its ongoing international development work, Vets Without Borders Ireland is currently leading the Community Goat Strengthening Project in Maadi Rural Municipality, Nepal. Launched in December 2023, this three-year initiative supports 120 goat-farming households, focusing on improving animal health, promoting sustainable farming practices, and enhancing access to markets.
